TÜBA-GEBIP

The Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA-GEBİP) Outstanding Young Scientists Award Program was initiated in 2001 with the aim of supporting young scientists in Türkiye who stand out through their research.

The primary objective of the program is to bring these scientists under the umbrella of the Academy, to foster the synergy that emerges from their interaction with each other and with Academy members, and to provide them with the academic and financial support they require.

Among TÜBA’s responsibilities are the promotion of research across all fields of science in Türkiye, the encouragement of scientific careers, the engagement of youth in scientific research, the enhancement of science’s public value, and the conferral of awards for these purposes. TÜBA-GEBİP plays an important role in fulfilling these objectives.

The program is conducted within the framework of the "GEBİP Principles", which are based on Articles 577 and 581 of Presidential Decree No. 4 dated 15 July 2018. As the foundation of the Turkish Young Academy, this program supports outstanding young scientists with high-caliber research, encouraging them to establish and advance their own research groups.

The postdoctoral stage of independent research is of critical importance in the development of scientists. During this period, researchers are expected to carry out scientific work independently and to undertake responsibilities such as thesis supervision. Accordingly, targeted incentive and support mechanisms are essential. TÜBA-GEBİP addresses this need by providing young scientists with a robust foundation for their advancement.

The program is open to applications from young scientists under the age of 40 who work in the fields of social sciences, science, engineering, and health sciences, who have a PhD in health sciences or other fields, and who work in Türkiye or plan to work in Türkiye. For female candidates, one year is added to this age limit for each birth.

One of the primary goals of TÜBA-GEBİP is to establish a dynamic scientific network composed of successful young researchers and research groups, renewed in three-year cycles. Through this network, the program seeks to contribute to scientific and societal development in Türkiye by fostering a new generation of competent researchers. The national and international achievements of the scientists awarded under the program are considered as an indicator of the impact of GEBİP.

The annual application timeline is determined by the TÜBA Academy Council, officially communicated to relevant universities and institutions, and publicly announced via the Academy’s website. Applications may be submitted individually or through nominations by university rectors or TÜBA Full and Honorary Members.

Applications are evaluated by the GEBİP Main Committee and the GEBİP Field Evaluation Committees, both established by the Academy Council. At the conclusion of the three-year award period, GEBİP members are invited to participate in TÜBA’s activities and may represent the Academy in national and international events. They may also be appointed to boards, subcommittees, and working groups within TÜBA.

Scientists who win the GEBİP award are obliged to indicate TÜBA/GEBİP support in every publication related to their supported scientific studies and to forward a copy of the publication to the TÜBA Presidency.

Under the program, each awardee receives an annual grant of 50,000 Turkish Lira for three years. In addition, an annual supplementary grant of 15,000 Turkish Lira is provided for doctoral students working under the supervision of the awardee.

The procedures and principles to be followed in the application, evaluation, and implementation processes of TÜBA-GEBİP are determined within the framework of the "GEBİP Principles".
